Turn a custom wooden pen!

In this project we will discuss pen kits, blank materials and finishes, then craft your pen. You'll take home a one of a kind pen - Hand Crafted by YOU!

This is a guided limited tool use class, no prior experience or sign offs required. This will not provide lathe tool sign off status.

All materials provided to make 2 wooden bodied pens. No resins or mixed media allowed in this class.

Prerequisite: None, however, --> Important: You must be a member AND have the WW Lathe Sign-off to use the Lathe outside of this class.

WW_S01: Yellow Tools - Woodshop Basic Sign-off (16 Apr 2026)

This class, in addition to Green Orientation (GO), is required in order to use the yellow tools without supervision. Start your woodworking journey with our most approachable power tools. This class is up to 2 hours of fun and learning. Class is required for everyone, regardless of experience level and tool sign off is conditional on a demonstration of competence during the class.

MW_S03: Metal Lathe Sign-off (16 Apr 2026)

Come learn the king of all tools, the metal lathe. The only tool in the shop that could make itself! Learn the transcendent joy of machining and watching chips fly! Learn how to safely, maintain, set up the machine, face, turn, and drill parts as well as cut short tapers!

Prerequisites: Use of this tool requires metalworking knowledge. We strongly suggest anyone taking this class also take Metal Shop Yellow first unless they have significant metalworking experience.

- Mandatory Safety Dress Code: Metal Shop dress code enforced. Comfortable closed-toe shoes; no jewelry; no loose clothing; long pants, and hair/beard tied back. ==>DO NOT wear synthetics.

Class is required for everyone wishing to use the listed tools, regardless of experience level. SL_S03: 3d Printer SLA LCD Sign-off (16 Apr 2026)

Nova Labs has a fleet of Phrozen Sonic 4K LCD-based SLA 3D Printers. SLA printing is much higher resolution than our FDM machines, and the LCD process is a good bit faster than laser SLA. These machines can be used to print jewelry or miniatures with a resolution of ~ 50 microns, but the prints do require a bit of post-processing before use. These machines are great for prints that are small but require more detail than the FDM machines can provide.

If you are interested in learning about this exciting technology and getting signed off on the equipment please join us.

MW_S02: CNC Plasma Table Sign-off (17 Apr 2026)

Get trained and signed off on the ArcLight Dynamics ArcMax CNC Plasma Table. The class gives an introduction to tool safely and effective use. Materials and vision protection will be provided. This tool can cut through up to 3/4" steel in a single pass using the power of plasma: cutting metal with fire the temperature of the sun, what could be more fun?

Prerequisites: No prior experience with plasma cutting is needed however, some prior experience with some form of computer-controlled machinery (like our lasers) is helpful and recommended, although not required.

Safety/Dress code: Students must wear natural fiber clothing (cotton or wool) and are recommended to bring breathing protection, as none will be provided. The instructor recommends the 3M Rugged Comfort Quick Latch Half Facepiece Reusable Respirator 6501QL (about $28) with the 2297 respirator cartridges (about $20). Note that complete respiratory protection requires a good fit, and as such, no recommendation can work for everyone. In particular, facial hair will interfere with the effectiveness of the recommended unit.

MC&AL is a social group for individuals who wish to hang out and work on their own thing. So bring a project to work on or something to show off or just come to get input or hang out for inspiration.

Your project should be something you can work on with other people present, and doesn't need an entire table by itself since the idea is to be social. Come out – socialize - make friends while making things and enjoying your hobby or learn a new one. Bring your dinner with you or a treat to share with the group.

Need a way to make new friends and finish projects at the same time? Perhaps you're a maker!

Want to network with other artists and crafters? Maybe you need an artist's lab or bench time too!

Ask to check out Crafters Cove where we have a variety or tools and a small Crafters Supply cabinet.

MAKE – DO – CREATE – SHARE – EXPLORE

WOW – kinda looks like a catch all – doesn't it? Well it is... MC&AL started life as three or four other groups with heavy overlap and not enough time for any one person to organize. Then we got together and came up with a PLAN since we all have multiple but similar interests and don't want to be locked in to any one thing.

This informal / social meeting is also for those people with projects and questions, maybe you've gotten stuck or come to a decision point. Come out and get a fresh perspective. I'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions even if we've never done anything like it! Your chance to share techniques and stay up to speed on emerging trends, and learn new skills or interests. Set a date and time to actually get something done and keep it – with us!

Do you love board games? Do you need more high-quality analog entertainment in your life? Do you miss socializing?

Members are encouraged to bring friends and guests. But please sign up so we know you are coming. BRING GAMES TO SHARE!

It is a low-key gathering of folks of all ages who want to relax, learn and play board games.

We will have a nice selection of titles you can try and you can also bring your own board game. Our aim is to have some quick to learn games, some medium complexity games, and to support the hardcore gamers as well.

At the beginning of the game event, we will try to help everyone find a group with similar interests. If you would feel comfortable helping to run a game for the night, please let us know when you come in and we will help you find players.

Feel free to bring your own food and drink. But please help us keep the games clean and dry.

Youth/Kids: Introducing kids to board games is one of life’s great joys. If Board Game Night can help introduce your kids to something new, that would be an awesome win. As with everything Nova Labs-related, we must adhere to the Youth Policy. Also, we want to be respectful of everyone’s ability to enjoy their board game night, so if your kids get tired, unruly, etc. please consider taking them home.

EL_O03: Robotics Group Meetup (Free, Public, Online) (18 Apr 2026)

There's a big community interested in Robotics within Nova Makers. This group meeting is for those people with projects and questions. If you're experienced with robotics, come over too - we need answers to all the questions! Group meets twice monthly on 1st and 3rd Saturdays.

We try to schedule one vendor or other speaker presentation for each meeting and then leave the rest for open discussion or work on your projects. Bring your robotics projects (in any state, even napkin sketches). We can do anything from learning where to start - to talking about robotics specifics.

TS_S01: Jewelry Tools Sign-off (18 Apr 2026)

Discover the foundations of Metalsmithing by making your own stackable rings! You will learn how to measure, cut, file, anneal and texture your metal before shaping it into a ring. You will then learn to solder the seam, quench and pickle, and discuss finishing. We will be using ring sizing mandrels, texturing hammers, Dremel tools, learning about jeweler's saws and files, and most importantly, learning how to make solder run without melting the whole thing!

Copper, brass and silver will be available, and you'll go home with your own custom-made rings! Keep them for yourself or they make great gifts.

Small butane torches will be used for soldering.

Prerequisites: None
Sign off: Jewelry Basic

Members will be allowed to return again and again to use the materials provided in The Studio and use the following tools: small butane torch, firebrick with heat resistant mat, soldering pick, pickle pot, ring mandrel, mallet/hammer, metal file, and jewelry saw.

Blacksmithing Safety Sign-Off: Forging a Bottle Opener

In our modern world, we take the ability to open bottles for granted with easy access to bottle openers anywhere we go. But our ancestors were not so lucky – back in the mists of time, only the most skilled craftsmen held the secret of making bottle-openers, and those methods were carefully guarded and passed down from
master to apprentice through the generations. The precious bottle-openers of antiquity were often inscribed with mystic runes or decorated with fearsome beast-heads to, I dunno, scare the evil spirits out of their Grape Nehi Soda bottles or something.

In this class we will teach you the ancient art of bottle-opener forging! Over the course of the afternoon you will learn to use Nova Lab’s blacksmithing equipment (forges, anvils, hammers, & tongs) to create and decorate a classic “church key” style bottle opener.
There are no pre-requisites for this class (other than age)! Completing this class will also count as the safety sign-off for Nova Lab’s blacksmithing equipment and will allow you to attend blacksmithing Open Office Hours.

WARNING: The regularly-offered Blacksmithing safety sign-off ("S" hook) this class is an hour longer and will equire a lot more vigorous hammering!

INSTRUCTOR: Robert M.

Instructor Bio: Robert has been a Nova Labs member since 2021 and a blacksmith since 2022. He is a mentor for Nova Labs' high school robotics team, Newton Squared, and is active in all the loud and/or smelly shops. In the forge, his main interest is small-scale artistic blacksmithing - hooks, keychains, and jewelry.

SIGN OFF: Blacksmithing Safety.

PREREQUISITES: None

AGE: 16 and over. Any person aged 16 or 17 must have a parent remain on the premises in case of emergency.

BL_G: Blacksmithing Practice Session Saturday (Members ONLY) (18 Apr 2026)

Due to the complexity and danger inherent in blacksmithing, we cannot offer truly “open” office hours. Instead, the blacksmith shop offers “practice sessions” for those that have taken the safety sign-off.

Come with a project in mind that you saw on YouTube, have one of our experienced blacksmiths recommend a project based on your experience level, or simply come out and pick from one of the examples hanging on the walls; one or more of our smiths will be present to help you pick out tools and materials.

You will leave with whatever metal you have beaten into submission.

There is a monetary cost for the practice sessions that goes beyond your normal monthly dues: Propane is expensive and we do not pass on that cost to the membership. Instead, blacksmiths are expected to cover fuel costs on their own, and the practice session cost covers the fuel and any metal that you use during the session.

Important -- Please review and acknowledge the rules and conditions listed below:

No more than 2 people per anvil
You must have taken BL_101.
Required safety items: You must wear safety glasses (we have some to borrow if you need them), leather shoes, and 100% non-synthetic clothes (cotton, wool, leather). You WILL NOT be able to blacksmith if you are wearing synthetic clothing. We suggest you mark your personal gloves and glasses since they are frequently forgotten at the lab.

Blacksmithing Policy: Minors under 16 years must be accompanied by a parent or designated adult who must supervise and participate alongside the minor (both must register). The adult must have taken Blacksmithing 101. The adult is responsible for the safety of the minor and must be close enough to physically intervene in case of danger.

WW_P04: Basic Wood Bowl Turning on the Lathe (19 Apr 2026)

WW_P05: French-Style Rolling Pin with Celtic Knot Design (2 days) (20 Apr 2026)

IMPORTANT: This is a 2 day class (April20 and April 21)

In this hands-on woodworking class, students will craft a French-style rolling pin featuring an intricate Celtic Knot-inspired design. Participants will learn essential lathe turning techniques, precision inlay work, and finishing methods to create a functional and artistic kitchen tool.

You do NOT need any tool sign offs for this class. Turning experience is a plus and would be a benefit to you, but not required. This is a limited tools use project class and will not provide any woodshop tool sign-offs.

This is a 2-day workshop.

Day 1 - April 20 at 6:00 PM - will focus on design, materials, jigs, finishes, cutting and the glue up of your rolling pen.

WW_P20: Woodworking Boot Camp (20 Apr 2026)

Are you new to woodworking? Do you have your tool sign-offs, and are wondering “now what?” This class is a fast-paced introduction to the craft and to the Nova Labs wood shop to help jump start your woodworking journey.

Topics and skills include: understanding wood, milling (planing and jointing), crosscuts, joinery, cutting curves on the band saw, and successful glue-ups. The backbone of the class is the completion of a wooden tool tote. The project provides the context for each topic and skill, and how they fit into the basic woodworking flow, and learning how to “think like a woodworker.”

This intense class requires students put in shop time in between classes to complete the demonstrated steps at their own pace. Students can leverage linked instructional videos and Nova Labs open office hours to build confidence and independence. This class also requires multiple sign-offs so students can practice independently.

Prerequisites: Prior metalworking knowledge. We strongly advise inexperienced metalworkers take the Metal Shop Yellow class prior to taking this class.

Have you ever wanted to hem your own pants but worried they wouldn't look professional? Join this class to learn 3 hem styles and sign-off the blind stitch machine too!

In this class, we will learn 3 commonly used techniques for hemming pants:

We will learn to set up and adjust the industrial blind stitch machine in addition to using a serger and a domestic sewing to prep and finish all three hems. You are welcome to bring in your own pants/slacks/jeans. Practice hems will also be available. Join us and find out just how EASY a professional hem can be!

This hands-on class will teach students the basics of the NL woodshop bandsaws. The class period is first spent discussing and demonstrating bandsaw anatomy, safety principles and practices, and rules of the road. The remainder of the class period is spent on several hands-on exercises for rip, cross and freehand cutting as well as resawing. If time allows, exercises may include cutting irregularly shaped objects like logs (or lawgz, if you're from the South).

Class required for everyone, regardless of experience level. Students who demonstrate the suitable skill and knowledge at the conclusion of class will be signed off immediately.

MW_S09: TIG Welding Sign-off (22 Apr 2026)

Looking to step up your metalworking game? Then enter the art of Tungsten Inert Gas welding! This class is a comprehensive crash-course through the core concepts of TIG welding and the prerequisite sign-off class for independent use of our machine in the metalworking shop.

Sign off: TIG Welder

Safety/Dress code: Students must wear natural fiber clothing (cotton or wool), closed-toe shoes (ideally made with natural materials). Tie back long hair. Long pants highly recommended as well as breathing protection. The instructor recommends the 3M Rugged Comfort Quick Latch Half Facepiece Reusable Respirator 6501QL (about $28) with the 2297 respirator cartridges (about $14-$19), or the Miller LPR-100. [Note that these respirators come in multiple sizes.]

Prerequisite: With welding, sooner or later, you are going to need to cut or shape the metal. This is why we require Metal Shop Basic sign-off for all independent welders.

If you take the welding sign off before the Basic sign-off class, we welcome members at Metal Shop Mondays where you can improve your skills under supervision. Both this sign-off and Metal Shop Basic sign-off are required to use the welder independently (without supervision).

Note: If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, that is a safety violation and you will not receive a refund.

EL_P04: Intro to LEDs, RGBs, and NEOPIXELS - Online (22 Apr 2026)

This class will introduce students to LEDs, how they work, different kinds available and how to control them. TinkerCAD examples will be used to illustrate how LEDs are used in circuits and how to control their illumination using Arduino UNO. The class cover single color and RGB discrete LEDs, LED strips, and NEOPIXELS.

Note: The 4 classes in our basic electronics series (EL_P01, P02, P03, and P04) along with a successfully mentored project earns the Nova Labs Basic Electronics Microcertification.

Prerequisites: None. *This is an adult class, but beginners of all ages are welcome.

TinkerCAD is a web based simulator. You do not have to download anything. You do have to make an account with a login.

MW_P01: Metal Lathe Threading (23 Apr 2026)

It's reckoned that the Greeks invented the screw back in the 5th century BC. By the 1st century BC, the Greeks and Romans were using screw presses to press clothes, olives and wine. The first nuts and bolts appeared in the middle 1400’s. They were hand made and not interchangeable. Joseph Whitworth In England proposed a standard screw resulting in the Whitworth Screw thread in 1841. In Philadelphia in 1864 William Sellers proposed a standard American V thread. Near the end of the second world war (78 years later) the Sellers thread became the "US Standard”.

The screw cutting engine lathe is the oldest and most important of machine tools. The first screw cutting lathes were made in the US in the early 1800’s and allowed the making of locomotives, electric motors and automobiles which drove the industrial revolution. The metal lathe with a lead screw is used to cut threads. Also the metal lathe makes it easier to cut threads using taps and dies.

In this class we will review the different types of screws. We will use taps, dies and the lathe to single point turn V threads.

CC_S02: MultiCAM CNC (Big Blue) Sign-off (23 Apr 2026)

A 2 hour course covering MultiCAM safety, job setup, and operations. There will be a briefing followed by a hands on session on the MultiCAM machine in the CNC area. Each student will take home CNC created parts which can be assembled into a final product. Product will vary from session to session at the instructor’s discretion. Examples include stools or seasonal home decorations.

This class does not cover CNC basics which were covered during the ShopSabre sign-off class. The focus is MultiCAM ops and safety. CAD, CAM or Speeds and Feeds training are also not included.

Sign off: MultiCAM CNC

Prerequisites: ShopSabre Safety Sign off; Demonstrated experience on the ShopSabre. Age 16 or older.

Safety Clothing: Long pants and closed-toed shoes. Do not wear rings, watches, or bracelets.

Shape and polish your own cabochon and set it into a bezel in this lapidary tools signoff class!

This class will cover the basic operation, maintenance, clean-up, and safe use of the cabochon machine and trim saw. Students will make a pendant by measuring, cutting, shaping, grinding and polishing a slab of rock into a cabochon, and learning how to set it into a bezel. Slabs and bezels will be provided.

Learn to use to use the Nova Labs powder gun, spray booth, and oven.

Powder coating is a process whereby a dry powder is deposited on a surface using electrostatic attraction and then baked to a durable, chemical-and-UV-resistant, attractive finish. It is actually easier to apply than standard spray paint, and in many cases gives a better result.

Safety and Dress: The powder is nonreactive and will not stain clothing, but may get on skin and clothes. Dress appropriately. Breathing protection is recommended but not required.

Woodturning is a fun, absorbing activity. Almost no one comes to the shop just to “putter around” with the table saw or the planer, but once you learn the basics of turning, you’ll want to putter around with the lathe. While this sign-off course is intended for those with no prior experience it is a prerequisite to use the lathe independently and this sign-off is required for the bowl-turning class. This course is NOT a project class, but focuses on the basic skills needed to turn. We will cover spindle-turning as well as learn how to safely use the lathe, how to take care of the tool within Nova Labs policies, and begin to develop proficiency with the roughing and spindle gouges, and the skew chisel. You won’t become an expert with one course, but I hope you will (re)discover that turning is fun and adds a new dimension to your portfolio of woodworking skills.

MW_P02: Welded Octopus Sculpture (26 Apr 2026)

In this hands on metalworking class, participants will create a small welded octopus sculpture using stainless steel silverware and bolts. This playful, character driven project introduces MIG welding through a guided, step by step process focused on safe tool use and controlled fabrication. While the overall structure is guided, each sculpture will have its own personality.

The focus of the class is learning basic MIG welding skills, safe tool use, and guided sculptural construction in the metal shop. No prior welding experience is required. All materials will be provided, and students will leave with a completed welded sculpture.

NOTE: This class is project based and does not provide metal shop tool sign offs or independent tool access outside of class time.

Marie is a sculptor and educator with a BFA in Sculpture from George Mason University. She specializes in welding and metalworking and enjoys exploring how different materials can connect and transform through the making process. 3D Scanning Yellow Tool Curriculum

The class covers the basics of 3D scanning as well as a hands-on demonstration with one of the 3D Scanners. Upon completion of the class you will be signed off to use any of the NovaLabs Yellow 3D Scanners on-site at NovaLabs.

Instructor Bio: Brian is a co-Steward in 3D printing and likes to think of himself as a friend to many shops, other shops are silent on if the feeling is mutual. In the real world he is a software architect so he tries to avoid architecting software at the labs and focus more on things that get hot, spin quickly and/or make a lot of noise. He takes photos and enjoys making and consuming food and beer.

Please arrive at this safety class on time. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, you may not be able to take the class and there will not be a refund or rescheduling.

MW_S10: Hand Plasma Cutter Sign-off (29 Apr 2026)

Ever wanted to cut freehand designs in steel like you would a piece of paper? Join the handheld plasma cutter class and get a sign off, learn to cut steel like butter!

After your sign-off is in the system, you could cut steel sheets and make lanterns, candle holders, hearts and roses, anything you can dream up!

Prerequisites: Class is open to the public and does not require a pre-requisite to take it. However, if you take this class before the Metal Shop Basic Sign-off class, you may not use the tool without supervision. Members may attend Metal Shop Mondays where you can improve your skills under supervision. Metal Shop Basic Sign-off and a membership are required to use the hand plasma independently (without supervision).

Safety/Dress code: Students must wear natural fiber clothing (cotton or wool), closed-toe shoes (ideally made with natural materials). Tie back long hair. Long pants highly recommended as well as breathing protection. The instructor recommends the 3M Rugged Comfort Quick Latch Half Facepiece Reusable Respirator 6501QL (about $28) with the 2297 respirator cartridges (about $13), or the Miller LPR-100. [Note that these respirators come in multiple sizes.]

Sign-off: Hand Plasma Cutter

Class is required for everyone wishing to use the listed tools, regardless of experience level. After taking this class, inexperienced or moderately experienced people should select a project and come in for help and practice on Metal Shop Mondays Open Office Hours.

Note: Must arrive within 15 minutes of class start time.

3D_S02: Advanced FDM 102 Prusa XL Printer Tool Safety Sign-off (IC & Key only) (4 May 2026)

Learn the basics of operating the Prusa XL 5-tool, multi-material printer. The Prusa XL has the largest print volume of our fleet, and allows mixing multiple types/colors of plastic in a single print.

Would you like to print flexible TPU in the same structure as more rigid PETG? Are you seeking a print with up to 5 different colors without having to change filament spools in midstream? Then at Nova Labs, the Prusa XL is the printer for you.

Prerequisite: The Prusa XL is an advanced multi-material printer. This is NOT a good machine to start your 3D printing journey. All attendees MUST have successfully completed FDM 101 and must have a Nova Labs FDM signoff, and SHOULD have many, many hours of printing experience. Ideally, an attendee will also have experience troubleshooting and solving some typical FDM printing problems. Attendance at the class is at the complete discretion of the instructor. Failure to satisfy these requirements may be result in an attendee registrant being asked to leave the class without refund.
Because of the typical length of time that it takes to complete a print on the XL, priority registration will be given to Key and Innovation Center members.

Sign off: FDM Prusa XL 3d printer after completion of course requirements at the discretion of Instructor.

Prior to the class it is strongly recommended that attendees review the Nova Labs Prusa XL wiki page https://www.notion.so/novalabs/Prusa-XL-5-Tool-d42b35eb267c410ea2e0dea27d1673cc as well as downloading and reviewing the Prusa XL handbook (https://help.prusa3d.com/downloads/xl/handbook).

Reviewing these Prusa XL guides can provide a great leg-up on operating the machine. It will also be extreme helpful to review the Nova Labs Prusa slideshow before class. The slideshow will likely also be reviewed in class. Afterall, 'repetition is knowledge.'

The class will run through some of the key differences in operating the Prusa XL vs the rest of our fleet (and possibly the rest of the 3d universe). But given the size/complexity of the Prusa XL, self-study will be needed for successfully designing and slicing designs on the Prusa XL. A solid working knowledge of 3d printers is strongly recommended for anyone looking to complete the signoff requirements on the Prusa XL device.

Printer XL signoffs are not automatic. It is not enough to attend the class: In the class, an attendee will be taught how to perform basic mechanics--e.g., change filament, manually dock heads etc., but will not be cleared to independently operate the Prusa XL.

An attendee will need to coordinate to meet with a 3d printer Steward during 3D printing office hours (which are generally every Monday night) with an object they have sliced themselves. The sliced object should reflect utilizing the XL's MMU. The attendee, under Steward supervision, will then setup the filament on the Prusa XL appropriate for their sliced design.

Only after showing proficiency on the Prusa XL operation, the attendee, at the discretion of the Steward, can be signed off for unsupervised use of the Prusa XL.

I know this all sounds boring, but this really is an incredible machine, and we all look forward to seeing what cool stuff you make with it.

Tools Covered: Prusa XL. It does NOT cover the SLA machines nor does it cover any other FDM printer.

In this workshop, we will cover what sublimation is and how it is used to customize puzzle blanks, satin ribbon, felt, polyester fabrics and more! As part of the sublimation process, you will learn to safely operate the Heat Press to earn its necessary sign-off.

This hands-on class will cover the basic skills of working safely and effectively with sheet metal in our metal shop. You’ll learn the safe operation of the key sheet forming tools by laying out a simple box from a pattern, cutting it to dimension using different shears, bending it into shape, and spot-welding the corners. Materials are included.

Non-members may take this class, especially if you have this equipment at home or have some basic metalworking. The project is a fun one to make and students use several tools.

Sign Off: Jump Shear, Throatless Shear, Sheet Metal Box & Pan Brake, Spot Welder.

Prerequisites: Metalshop basic class is highly recommended, but not required.

Safety Clothing: Please wear safety glasses, long pants, and closed-toed shoes. Do not wear rings, watches, necklaces, lanyards, or bracelets, tie back long hair. You may wish to bring lightweight gloves.

Note: Additionally, the class builds in a 15-minute window to allow for traffic events. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late the class will have already started, you will not be caught up, nor will you receive a sign-off or a refund.

Or maybe you were thinking of crafting an all-leather bedroom set as a wedding present, but you didn't quite relish the thought of hand stitching elastic to the suede fitted sheet? Perhaps you merely want to see just how fast one can sew?

The Consew Industrial Sewing Machine can sew a range of materials from light cotton to heavy canvas or several layers of leather. Can it sew through solid steel? No, it cannot, but if you've ever cried out "This denim is just too thick! I'll never be able to finish these curtains!" well, we've got you covered.

Hands-on learning with real components, breadboard, and testing equipment, makes great connections for using the electronics tool bench, ours or yours.

Students are introduced to the basic electronics concepts using TinkerCAD's amazing electronics simulator. Build and experiment with electronic circuits in a visually accurate, functional simulator that is designed for easy use. No components to buy, no soldering. With TinkerCAD you can learn to work with a variety of components, breadboards, test instruments, sensors and there are even Arduinos and displays you can program (not covered in the basic class).

Note: The 4 classes in our basic electronics series (EL_P01, P02, P03, and P04) along with a successfully mentored project earns the Nova Labs Basic Electronics Microcertification.

Prerequisites: None. *This is an adult class, but beginners of all ages are welcome.

Believe it or not, most “chefs’ knives” that you can purchase for less than $200 are not hardened, as the manufacturers know that home users generally won’t be able to tell the difference between raw and heat-treated stainless steel.

But we’re Nova Labs Makers, gosh dang it, and we absolutely will be heat-treating our steel! In fact, we will be heating our knife blanks though several steps (as high as 1900°F) in our precision heat-treating oven, and then cryo-quenching in liquid nitrogen, taking them down to -100°F.

There are few things more satisfying than creating a tool that you will use on a daily basis, and making a kitchen knife out of high-quality, heat-treated stainless steel is one of those maker-projects where the final product is better than what you can typically buy. Plus you will learn the steps necessary to make your own set of chef’s knives – you will never lack for holiday gift ideas again!

In this class you will create a fillet knife out of “Nitro-V” stainless steel, grind it into a basic shape, heat-treat the steel using a precision oven, and cryo-quench the blank using liquid nitrogen. Along the way you will get signed off on the Nova Labs heat-treat oven, and the 2x72” Grinder. You will also learn a bit about advanced metallurgy, knife-grinding techniques, and handle-making.

Two things to note:
- First, this is NOT a traditional blacksmithing class – we will not be swinging a hammer or even firing up a forge.
- Second, this is a “homework” class where you will be provided with the materials and knowledge to finish the project, but it will require several hours of your own time to complete the process.

As part of the cost for this class the students receive:
•   A stainless steel blank for a 5+ inch fillet knife
•   Kirinite handle material
•   Brass pins to secure the handle
•   A set of six 2x72” belts for the belt grinder
•   Two RED tool sign-offs

This class is the follow-on to the MW: Vertical Mill Sign Off class, and is designed to introduce the student to the advanced capabilities and features of the Bridgeport and vertical mills. We will cover the set-up of the mill, methods of securing parts, basic end mill bits, table operations, understanding the Digital Read Out (DRO), and the differences between the Bridgeport and the Enco Mill.

After the class, students will receive material, parts, and a drawing of the class project: a machinist tool block with assorted sized of center drills and a 6" stainless scale to keep. Completion and instructor approval of the class project within the next 30 days is a prerequisite to being signed off on the Bridgeport and Vertical milling machines. 1:1 instructor assistance is available during the project completion period for any student requiring additional direction or assistance with mill operations.

There are so many things you can create with Machine Embroidery - from customizing your own clothing to monograms, patches, applique, quilting and more!

Attend this 2 part class to get signed off on the PFAFF Creative Home Embroidery Machine and the Happy Voyager 12 Head Industrial Embroidery Machine. Learn the Hatch Customizing software and everything else you need for successful machine embroidery projects.

This class meets for 2 days. You must attend both classes to get signed off. If you miss one class you will have to reregister/repay for the course. Make up classes will not be offered.

Perquisites: Age 16+

Sign off: PFAFF Creative Home Embroidery Machine and the Happy Voyager 12 Head Industrial Embroidery Machine

This class requires 2 students to run. If less then 2 students register, the class will be cancelled and you will be offered a full refund.

Ever wanted to cut freehand designs in steel like you would a piece of paper? Join the handheld plasma cutter class and get a sign off, learn to cut steel like butter!

After your sign-off is in the system, you could cut steel sheets and make lanterns, candle holders, hearts and roses, anything you can dream up!

Safety/Dress code: Students must wear natural fiber clothing (cotton or wool), closed-toe shoes (ideally made with natural materials). Tie back long hair. Long pants highly recommended as well as breathing protection. The instructor recommends the 3M Rugged Comfort Quick Latch Half Facepiece Reusable Respirator 6501QL (about $28) with the 2297 respirator cartridges (about $13), or the Miller LPR-100. [Note that these respirators come in multiple sizes.]

EL_P02: Intro to Microcontroller Programming with the Arduino (Online) (27 May 2026)

Elevate your basic electronics skills with this hands-on introduction to basic microcontroller hardware and programming class using the inexpensive Arduino board. Connect to switches, LEDs, resistors, and other basic components using the TinkerCAD simulator. In electronics, the inexpensive Arduino allows you to add interactive features and control other devices. New to coding? TinkerCAD block coding tools helps get you started to writing code for all our project needs.

Note: The 4 classes in our basic electronics series (EL_P01, P02, P03, and P04) along with a successfully mentored project earns the Nova Labs Basic Electronics Microcertification.

Prerequisites: None. *This is an adult class, but beginners of all ages are welcome.

Other Nova Labs Events you should attend: The Arduino meetups (3rd Tuesday in the month) and Robotics Meetups (1st and 3rd Saturday in the month) now held virtually, at which you can discuss your projects with other makers. After Nova Labs reopens, there will be Electronics Evenings to discuss projects, and members can use the Electronics bench to make things.

Before Class Sign up for a free TinkerCAD account before class so that you can take full advantage and follow along on your screen.

TinkerCAD is a web based simulator. You do not have to download anything. You do have to make an account with a login.

Log into TinkerCAD; it will help if you have also accessed TinkerCAD Circuits (below the “3D Designs” option) and looked at the interface.

MW_S06: Metalshop Surface Grinder Sign-off - HELD FOR WAITLIST TIL 4/22 (18 Jun 2026)

The surface grinder is a precision grinding tool designed to flatten steel material, and/or produce a finished surface on steel, Accuracy to .001 can be readily obtained on a steel surface. Nova-Labs Harig618 is a manually operated tool, not computer controlled, but can nonetheless achieve mirror like finishes, precise angles, and perfectly flat surfaces on steel stock. Unlike some machine tools a maker can achieve quality results with a short operational learning curve. Great for makers of all stripes.
