Makerschool students will experience a diverse, hands-on educational journey. We believe all children are makers and we believe makers are people who collaborate with others, have the courage to try new things, communicate their ideas, and create a better world around them. In addition to core academic subjects our pods offer students everyday opportunities to explore, ask questions, and create solutions.
The K-2 Pod will spend the year studying medieval world history from the fall of the Roman Empire to the dawn of the Renaissance. They will study biology while learning about the plant kingdom, the animal kingdom, and the human body. Science labs are hands-on and experiential, making complex concepts accessible to young learners. Our mastery-based phonics program will guide students’ to begin or master the art of reading, while book club opportunities and read-alouds that accompany their learning in science and history will expose their imaginations to the possibilities and adventures of the written word. Our math program is Common Core-based and will guide students through basic concepts and logic puzzles. Students will, of course, each work at their own grade level and pace in each subject.
Opportunities for nature exploration and exercise are part of our daily routine. Finally, each day will include a full hour of everybody’s favorite: makerclass. Fabiana Cesa, Nova Labs’ resident artist and maker, will journey with your student through a series of long-term projects that involve planning, design, art, engineering, technology, and the kitchen sink! Makerclass projects include creating historical dioramas, aerodynamic planes, binding books, and creating toolboxes and racecars out of wood. Our makerclasses are designed to introduce your child to a variety of crafts, skills, and materials, build planning and executive function skills, and inspire a love of the maker process.
