Damascus Cu-Mai Knifemaking, from Start to Finish

In this class we will make a Cu-mai Damascus knife like the one pictured above:  That is, a knife with a solid core of mono-steel, clad in a layer of pattern-welded Damascus steel braised on with copper.  It will feature hidden-tang construction, a copper bolster/guard, and a tropical hardwood handle.

This class is not for the faint of heart and requires a significant time commitment over multiple very full weekends.  But it will feature a small class-size (just two students for this initial offering), and between sixteen and twenty hours of personalized, hands-on instruction.

Along the way, you’ll learn all sorts of things about metallurgy, knife-making, and materials.  You’ll also get signed-off on the 2x72-inch grinder and learn how to independently set up both the forge-welding and temperature-controlled forges.

PREREQUISITES: Age 16 and over. Students must be current members of Nova Labs and have successfully taken the Blacksmithing 101 and Metalshop Yellow (101) classes.  It is highly recommended that the Student has attended a number of Nova Labs Blacksmithing Practice Sessions before attempting this project.

    Schedule:

Day 1 (six to eight hours)
    •    Introduction to Damascus steel and forge welding
    •    Creation of a ~100 layer Damascus billet of steel
    •    Introduction to Cu-mai
    •    Creation of a Cu-mai billet
    •    Annealing the billet

Day 2 (four to six hours)
    •    Surface grinding and flattening
    •    Profiling the knife
    •    Rough-grinding using a knife-making jig
    •    Heat treatment, quenching, and tempering

Day 3 (six to eight hours)
    •    Final grinding by hand
    •    Hand-sanding
    •    Milling and fitting the guard
    •    Drilling and broaching the handle
    •    Shaping the handle & guard
    •    Etching the Damascus
    •    Final fit & finish

WARNING: This is a long and time intensive event that takes place over three days.  Being late and/or missing class may result in not being able to complete the training - at the instructors discretion.

SIGN OFFs:  2x72-inch grinder and learn how to independently set up both the forge-welding and temperature-controlled forges (Blacksmithing Set-up).

Instructor Bio: Pat is many things to many people: Blacksmithing Steward, Nova Labs Board Member, Nova Labs Vice President, husband, father, and amateur lawn care technician.  Pat has been blacksmithing for eight years and regularly teaches classes for blacksmithing beginners

MC&AL is a social group for individuals who wish to hang out and work on their own thing. So bring a project to work on or something to show off or just come to get input or hang out for inspiration.

Your project should be something you can work on with other people present, and doesn't need an entire table by itself since the idea is to be social. Come out – socialize - make friends while making things and enjoying your hobby or learn a new one. Bring your dinner with you or a treat to share with the group.

Need a way to make new friends and finish projects at the same time? Perhaps you're a maker!

Want to network with other artists and crafters? Maybe you need an artist's lab or bench time too!

Ask to check out Crafters Cove where we have a variety or tools and a small Crafters Supply cabinet.

    MAKE – DO – CREATE – SHARE – EXPLORE

Including but not limited to: crochet, knitting, sewing, quilting, costuming, leather work, chain maille, beading, light metal work, portable weaving, jewelry piecing, scrap booking, stamping, embroidery, needlepoint, tatting, collage art, decoupage, card making, papercrafts, fiber arts, polymer clay, sketching and drawing, mixed media, calligraphy, digital art, writing, painting, small scale sculpting or carving, photo editing, etc.

WOW – kinda looks like a catch all – doesn't it? Well it is... MC&AL started life as three or four other groups with heavy overlap and not enough time for any one person to organize. Then we got together and came up with a PLAN since we all have multiple but similar interests and don't want to be locked in to any one thing.

This informal / social meeting is also for those people with projects and questions, maybe you've gotten stuck or come to a decision point. Come out and get a fresh perspective. I'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions even if we've never done anything like it! Your chance to share techniques and stay up to speed on emerging trends, and learn new skills or interests. Set a date and time to actually get something done and keep it – with us!

Due to the complexity and danger inherent in blacksmithing, we cannot offer truly “open” office hours. Instead, the blacksmith shop offers “practice sessions” for those that have taken the safety sign-off.

Come with a project in mind that you saw on YouTube, have one of our experienced blacksmiths recommend a project based on your experience level, or simply come out and pick from one of the examples hanging on the walls; one or more of our smiths will be present to help you pick out tools and materials.

You will leave with whatever metal you have beaten into submission.

There is a monetary cost for the practice sessions that goes beyond your normal monthly dues: Propane is expensive and we do not pass on that cost to the membership. Instead, blacksmiths are expected to cover fuel costs on their own, and the practice session cost covers the fuel and any metal that you use during the session.

Important -- Please review and acknowledge the rules and conditions listed below:

    • No more than 2 people per anvil
    • You must have taken BL_101.
    • Required safety items: You must wear safety glasses (we have some to borrow if you need them), leather shoes, and 100% non-synthetic clothes (cotton, wool, leather). You WILL NOT be able to blacksmith if you are wearing synthetic clothing. We suggest you mark your personal gloves and glasses since they are frequently forgotten at the lab.

Blacksmithing Policy: Minors under 16 years must be accompanied by a parent or designated adult who must supervise and participate alongside the minor (both must register). The adult must have taken Blacksmithing 101. The adult is responsible for the safety of the minor and must be close enough to physically intervene in case of danger.

    Prerequisite: Blacksmithing 101 Sign-off (BL_101)

*Refunds not offered if prerequisites are not met at the time of the class.

Why YOU should attend: Highly recommended for members who are inexperienced CNC tool users. Get to know your stewards and the other CNC community makers. Get help with your projects. Ask questions.

Shop Safety: Highly recommend you bring your own safety glasses and ear protection. Wear closed-toed shoes. Portal reservation on this event is required because tools and space are limited.

Age: Minors 16 and older with projects and questions welcome when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian

NOTE: Unless just asking questions, attending these meetups is not a substitute for the required tool sign offs. Having previous tool experience is useful but insufficient. To use shop tools independently, you must be an attendee or member with documented safety sign-off for the relevant tools.

Suggest you message the event hosts beforehand on #cnc channel with your intentions to increase the chances of the shop being prepared for your project.
