BL_P01: Bladesmithing Project: Forging a type IV Seax

Students will learn to forge a type IV seax style knife in a historically accurate pattern from high carbon steel.

Techniques for how to make a handle and bolster will also be discussed.

Prerequisites:  Current Nova Labs member,
Blacksmithing Safety sign off, and age 16+

Students will:
- how to begin a preform
- how to use set hammers and other top/bottom tools to set ricasso shape and form the tang
- basic beveling techniques
- Get hands-on forging time making knives
- Walk away with a rough forged knife ready to be ground.
- Appropriate steel will be provided

Minors 16-17: May take the class, but parents must remain in the lab and available in case needed or in an emergency.

REQUIRED to BRING/SAFETY: There are lots of sparks.

  • So, you MUST wear Non-synthetic clothes (cotton or wool clothing), including leather shoes and long pants are a must.
  • Long sleeve shirts are not necessary, but no shorts.
  • You must bring your own safety glasses.
  • Masks are also required for this class.
  • Failure to wear appropriate clothing may result in being turned away from the class without a refund or rescheduling.

Class fee is $125.

Please arrive at this class on time. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, you may not be able to take the class and there will not be a refund or rescheduling.
