According to Seri Robinson, wood technology expert, wood has natural anti-microbial properties. These properties are interrupted by both glue and by wood finishes which can harbor bacteria over time. They believe that the best cutting board is a single unfinished piece of wood.

In this introductory technique-driven woodworking class students will make a one-piece long grain cutting board. Students will be introduced to the basics of reading wood grain as discussed by Wilbur Pan and Shannon Rogers among others.  Wood processing techniques may including splitting, hewing, draw-knifing, ripping and planning. Students will practice cross cutting and using a shooting board.  Surface treatments including sanding, scraping and planing will be discussed.

Materials are included.  No sign-offs required.
