MW_S05: Bridgeport Mill Safety Sign-off

This class is a follow-up to MW: Vertical Mill Sign-Off and introduces students to the advanced capabilities and features of the Bridgeport and other vertical milling machines.

Topics covered include:

• Setting up the mill
• Methods for securely holding parts
• Basic end mills and their uses
• Table operations
• Understanding and using the Digital Readout (DRO)
• Differences between the Bridgeport and Enco mills

After the class, each student will receive the materials, components, and technical drawing needed to complete the class project: a machinist’s tool block. Students will also receive assorted sizes of center drills and a 6-inch stainless scale to keep.

Students must complete the project and receive instructor approval within 30 days of the class to qualify for sign-off on the Bridgeport and vertical milling machines. One-on-one instructor assistance will be available during the project-completion period for students who need additional guidance with mill operations.

Sign-Off:
Bridgeport Mill—granted upon completion and instructor approval of the class project.

Prerequisites:

• MW: Intro to Basic Metalworking Sign-Off
• MW: Vertical Mill Sign-Off
• Significant recent experience using the Enco Mill or another milling machine
• Must be 18 years of age or older

Safety Dress Code:
The Metal Shop dress code will be strictly enforced. Students must wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and long pants. Jewelry and loose clothing are not permitted. Long hair and beards must be securely tied back. Do not wear synthetic clothing.

Arrival Policy:
Students must arrive no later than 15 minutes after the scheduled class start time.

Instructor:
Jonathan Thacher is a CNC steward and experienced metalworker with extensive knowledge of operating and repairing Metal Shop equipment.
