AC_P07: Sew It Begins - Intro to the Domestic Sewing Machine

Knowing how to set up and confidently operate a sewing machine opens a whole new world of creative possibilities from garments to quilting and home decor to cosplay and costumes. In this introductory class, we will go step by step through setting up a sewing machine: winding a bobbin, inserting the needle, and threading the machine. Once you are ready, we will learn to use the straight and zig zag stitches as you learn the difference between a seam and hem and practice confidently sewing each. To help you understand the pitfalls common to sewing machine snafus, we’ll discuss troubleshooting throughout the learning process, as well as tips and techniques to start you out with helpful habits.

This class is designed to provide a daytime introductory course option to the community. It is perfect for anyone curious about sewing who wants to try out using a machine without committing to a full series of classes, or for those who have not touched a machine in years and would benefit from a guided refresher. Students are welcome to bring a personal machine, however it needs to be in verified working order and must also have: at least one bobbin, a regular (usually “A” or “1”) presser foot, foot pedal, power cord, and printed instruction manual. Classroom machines are also available for use. Thread and fabric will be provided.

This class must have three students to run. If the class is canceled due to lack of attendance you will be issued a full refund.
