    This class will describe how to use various simple types of sensor with Arduino microcontrollers, using TinkerCAD premade circuit/coded examples. It will cover Digital and Analog sensors, some ways to manage the input and see the output. Some programs are coded using block coding like Scratch and some are in text (C++) but should be not too difficult to follow. The free TinkerCAD simulator makes it easy and quick to build and try ideas. Premade circuits offer examples you can look at and modify.

    Prerequisites
    Some familiarity with Arduino and simple coding will be useful – you do not have to be an expert.
    Nova Labs class Arduino 101 is enough.
    Ages: Suggested teen to adult.
    Preparation/Tools
    • TinkerCAD is a web based simulator, you do not have to download anything. You do have to make an account with login. After you are logged in the circuits is below the 3D CAD.

    This class, in addition to Green Orientation (GO), is required in order to use the router without supervision.

    This safety and skills class will introduce you to the router, the single most versatile tool in the woodshop. With the right accessories, the router can do it all. Learn to use a router safely as well as a few basic techniques. The class covers basic operation, safety concerns, and a few particulars of using these tools at Nova Labs. If you complete the class and demonstrate your proficiency, the instructor will certify you to use the routers independently. This class is required for everyone, regardless of experience level.

    A sharp tool is a turner's best friend. If you are having difficulty achieving smooth cuts and relying on scraping rather than cutting then this is the class for you. In this class you will learn a quick and easy way to repeatedly and consistently sharpen all of your wood turning tools using the Wolverine sharpening system on a slow speed grinder. The Varigrind jig will be demystified and you will be show a simple method to sharpen all of your bowl and spindle gouges. Sharpening the spindle roughing gouge, skew, and scraper will also be discussed and demonstrated. Bring your turning tools - as many as you want to sharpen to practice your skills in class or use the studio tools.

    Prerequisites: Woodshop Lathes sign off and Nova Labs Green Orientation (GO!)
    Mandatory Safety Dress Code: Closed-toed shoes, short sleeves, no loose clothing, and hair tied back. Must wear a mask at all times and must bring your own safety glasses. Optional: Hearing protection, particle filter, or dust mask.

    This class, in addition to Green Orientation (GO), is required in order to use the table saw without supervision.

    Learn how to use the NoVA Labs SawStop table saw. In this rowdy 2 hr class you will learn to employ the table saw for the most frequently needed operations: precision cross-cutting and ripping. You'll also learn the true meaning of the phrases "finger-tight", and "about right". You'll learn about "kickback" and how to avoid it.

    Class is required for everyone, regardless of experience level. Sufficiently motivated students who show competence will be signed off immediately at the conclusion of class.

    Sign off: Tablesaw
    Prerequisite: Nova Labs Green Orientation*
    Safety Dress Code: Woodshop dress code enforced. Comfortable closed-toed shoes; natural fiber clothing (wool, cotton, leather); no loose clothing; and hair and beard tied back). Must wear a mask at all times and must bring your own safety glasses.

    This class, in addition to Green Orientation (GO), is required in order to use the lathes without supervision.

    Woodturning is a fun, absorbing activity. Almost no one comes to the shop just to “putter around” with the table saw or the planer, but once you learn the basics of turning, you’ll want to putter around with the lathe. While this sign-off course is intended for those with no prior experience it is a prerequisite to use the lathe independently and this sign-off is required for the bowl-turning class. This course is NOT a project class, but focuses on the basic skills needed to turn. We will cover spindle-turning as well as learn how to safely use the lathe, how to take care of the tool within Nova Labs policies, and begin to develop proficiency with the roughing and spindle gouges, and the skew chisel. You won’t become an expert with one course, but I hope you will (re)discover that turning is fun and adds a new dimension to your portfolio of woodworking skills.

    This class will introduce students to LEDs, how they work, different kinds available and how to light them. TinkerCAD will be briefly introduced and where functionally supported,
    TinkerCAD examples will be used to illustrate how LEDs are used in circuits and how to control their illumination using Arduino UNO.

    The class will introduce a single color and RGB discrete LEDs, LED strips and NEOPIXELS.

    Prerequisites:  Some exposure to electricity and simple programming would be useful.

    Preparation/Tools: You will need to sign up for a free account at TinkerCAD before class.
    • TinkerCAD is a web-based simulator, you do not have to download anything. You do have to make an account with a login. After you are logged in, the circuits simulation selection is below the 3D CAD on the start page

    End-grain cutting boards are beautiful, durable, and functional. This is your chance to learn how to design and make your own!

    To complete this class plan to attend all three days listed below.

    In this hands-on class you will learn how to make an end-grain cutting board from start to finish. All materials will be provided for you to make a beautiful end-grain cutting board to take home with you.

    Day 1 - Friday, Jan 29 (7-9 pm)
    You’ll see the process step-by-step to prepare raw boards of wood and to get the cuts you need for a cutting board of various dimensions. You’ll see the jointer, plainer, and table saw in action. You will design your board with a variety of woods provided and do your first glue up.

    Day 2 - Sunday, Jan 31 (9-11 am)
    You will prepare your board to be cut, observe the table saw, and will do your second glue up.

    Day 3 - Monday, Feb 1 (6-9 pm)
    You will clean up your board and use the drum sander to smooth it. We will use the router to create the edge you want and then you will apply the finish.

    Learn the basics of prepping, casting and finishing your own concrete counter-tops! A mix of demonstration and hands-on practice, participants will learn how to create molds, reinforce the build with mesh, mix and color the concrete, pour the concrete, polish the slab, then finally finish the counter with an appropriate finish.
    Students will take home a small (4"x4") concrete coaster that uses the same techniques as a full counter-top. This is a messy, fun project…no special tools involved, so bring the tweens and teens to help out parents and learn!

    Prerequisites: GO

    Requirements: Eye protection (Safety glasses), Mask

    This class covers two of the most frequently used tools for any project. The jointer and planer are essential when preparing raw materials for all kinds of woodworking.     This class, in addition to Green Orientation (GO), is required in order to use the bandsaw without supervision.

    This hands-on class will teach students the basics of the NL woodshop bandsaws. The class period is first spent discussing and demonstrating bandsaw anatomy, safety principles and practices, and rules of the road. The remainder of the class period is spent on several hands-on exercises for rip, cross and freehand cutting as well as resawing. If time allows, exercises may include cutting irregularly shaped objects like logs (or lawgz, if you're from the South).

    Class required for everyone, regardless of experience level. Students who demonstrate the suitable skill and knowledge at the conclusion of class will be signed off immediately.

    Tool Sign-off: All Bandsaws (Rikon, General, Laguna)
    Prerequisites: Nova Labs Green Orientation (GO!)*
    Mandatory Safety Dress Code: Wear closed-toed shoes, and no loose clothing. Things that present an "entanglement hazard", like long hair or dangly jewelry should be tied back or removed. Must wear a mask at all times and must bring your own safety glasses.

    The NVIDIA Jetson Interest Group is interested in understanding and using the NVIDIA Jetson GPUs (TK1, TX1 and TX2). These GPUs are specialized pieces of hardware that can do high speed image processing as well as execute the newest neural networks. They are designed for low power operation so they can be used in embedded systems like cars, robots and drones.

    In fact the Nvidia Jetson TX1 is the chip that powers the amazing Skydio drone (https://www.skydio.com/). This drone does all of its maneuvering using a series of 6 pairs of navigation cameras and a ton of video/image processing on the TX1. There is a 13th camera to record the user and I suspect it is processed by the TX1 as well.

    The TX2 chip is at the heart of the Open Source Robotics Foundation's robot stereo camera system: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1NCimNJTRP6g3ESWhmaqi4t3dOprq7Yvne_JLeCTt3io (on GitHub https://github.com/osrf/ovc).

    While this group is initially looking at the NVIDIA Jetson family of GPUs, most of our discussions will be completely general and appropriate to anyone interested in programming or using NVIDIA GPUs of any flavor.
