Nova Labs has a new fleet of LCD-based SLA 3D Printers: Phrozen Sonic 4K machines. SLA printing is much higher resolution than our FDM machines, and the LCD process is a good bit faster than laser SLA. These machines can be used to print jewelry or miniatures with a resolution of ~ 50 microns, but the prints do require a bit of post-processing before use. These machines are great for prints that are small but require more detail than the FDM machines can provide.

If you are interested in learning about this exciting technology and getting signed off on the equipment please join us Online only. Sign up through the new Events Portal: .

Note: This class does not cover the Form Labs Form 3 SLA 3d printer (located at 1930 annex) which is a separate sign off.

YOU MUST also make your own reservation on Zoho reservation. We'll be verifying so you must bot sign up for a slot AND reserve in Zoho.

Why YOU should attend: Highly recommended for inexperienced metalworkers. Get to know your stewards and the other metalworkers in your community. Ask about the next sign-off classes. Get help with your projects. Ask questions.

Shop Safety: bring your OWN safety glasses and ear protection. Wear closed-toed shoes. MASK REQUIRED. Portal reservation required.

Age: Minors 16 and older with projects and questions welcome when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian

NOTE: Attending these meetups is not a substitute for the required tool sign offs. Having previous tool experience is useful but insufficient. To use shop tools independently, you must be an attendee or member with documented safety sign-off for the relevant tools. The liability waiver and sign off will be verified and enforced by the event hosts!

Suggest you message the event hosts beforehand on #metalworking channel with your intentions to increase the chances of the shop being prepared for your project.

There's a big community interested in Robotics within Nova Makers. This group meeting is for those people with projects and questions. If you're experienced with robotics, come over too - we need answers to all the questions!

We try to schedule one vendor or other speaker presentation for each meeting and then leave the rest for open discussion or work on your projects. Bring your robotics projects (in any state, even napkin sketches). We can do anything from learning where to start - to talking about robotics specifics.

We meet the first and third Saturday each month.

On May 1st at 11am the American Visionary Art Musem (avam.org) is live-streaming the 2021 Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race in small scale. The Nova Labs build team will be meeting at Nova Labs to watch the live-stream and grill up some hotdogs. You can RSVP to the stream here: https://www.avam.org/event-details/honey-i-shrunk-the-kinetic-sculpture-race and watch where convenient, but we're going for a socially-distanced gathering to watch it together.

For over 20 years the American Visionary Art Museum has bequeathed the Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race onto the eager denizens of that extremely hilly city. Traditionally, in that race human-powered amphibious all-terrain vehicles fly through the city of Baltimore and swim through the harbor for the sole purpose of art and inspiration.

The race is held the first Saturday of May, including this year! What's new this year is that the race is running at 1/12 scale, nice and small, but more importantly it will be live streamed so that everyone can watch. There are approximately 30 vehicles entered; so it is unclear how long each vehicle will take to run the course, but most likely the race to last most of the afternoon.

Chef Paul Chase will bring in a tiny grill, hotdogs and condiments. BYOB (No alcohol!); if you'd like to bring something to share please pop into the #kinetic-sculpture slack channel to help plan! If you can attend, do not feel obliged to remain for the entire event -Stay and watch (and eat hot dogs) for as long as you would like. But you will need to make a reservation before you attend.

Do not RSVP here, go to the Nova Labs portal to sign up:

Did we mention the free hot dogs?

After you've taken Blacksmithing 101, continue learning and having fun with blacksmithing. Make new stuff or continue a project. One of our experienced smiths will be there to help.

Look up fun stuff on Instructables and YouTube. Most of the time, you end up with something really cool, and you always have fun trying. You will leave with whatever metal you have beaten into submission.

This is for ASSOCIATES and KEY MEMBERS ONLY.

Important -- Please review and acknowledge the rules and conditions listed below:

    1. No more than 2 people per anvil
(which will limit us to a mere 8 folks if we haul out the "broken" anvil).
    2. Masks must be worn at all times.
    3. Social distancing of six feel must be maintained
(we will spread out the anvils to facilitate this).
    4. No more than two people in the inside area at any time
(which includes standing in the doorway using the press).
    5. We can't provide a community water cooler, and it's going to be really hot - everyone MUST bring some water/juice to stay hydrated.
    6. Obviously, you must have taken BS 101.
    7. Required safety items: You must wear safety glasses (we have some to borrow if you need them), leather shoes, and 100% non-synthetic clothes (cotton, wool, leather). You WILL NOT be able to blacksmith if you are wearing synthetic clothing. We suggest you mark your personal gloves and glasses since they are frequently forgotten at the lab.

Blacksmithing Policy: Minors under 16 years must be accompanied by a parent or designated adult who must supervise and participate alongside the minor (both must register). The adult must have taken Blacksmithing 101. The adult is responsible for the safety of the minor and must be close enough to physically intervene in case of danger.

Prerequisite: Green Orientation Sign-off AND Blacksmithing 101 Sign-off

Cost covers use of propane, materials and tools.

*Refunds not offered if prerequisites are not met at the time of the class.

Mending Mondays is an opportunity to gather to restore ripped seams, replace buttons, darn socks and otherwise restore rather than toss away favorite garments. We’ll sometimes re-purpose what can’t be mended into something new. To be clear, we’re not offering to repair your clothing. You’ll mend your own items; we’re providing space and occasional guidance.
