    Join Makerschool for an adventure as we explore the universe and sail the cosmic seas as Galactic Explorers and Space Pirates! This camp blends the wonders of space exploration with the thrilling adventures of pirate life, featuring hands-on STEAM activities for ages 6-13.

    All campers will enjoy storytelling sessions that combine the mysteries of space and the thrill of pirate adventures, design space telescopes to explore the galaxy, create galaxy paintings using various art techniques, and engage in interactive pirate-themed games. Younger campers (ages 6-8) will create pirate gear, build and decorate foam boats, construct cardboard peg legs, and draw treasure maps. Older campers (ages 9-13) will design and 3D print spaceships, experience Mars rover landing simulations, and design human habitats for faraway planets.

    In this camp teens sharpen skills to make ideas a reality using cutting-edge technology including digital fabrication, laser cutting, soldering, 3D printing, and electronics. Each day brings new challenges to build skills and broaden creativity. In our state of the art makerspace, campers innovate and create under the guidance of expert makers, transforming from curious learners to skilled creators. For Teenagers (Ages 12-18)

    It's beach towel season are you ready?    Tired of losing your towel at the pool or beach?  Do you need a summer birthday gift or want to get started early on Christmas? 

    BRING YOUR OWN TOWEL  and Karen will walk you though machine embroidering a beautiful monogram on it!  No sign off necessary! (Thread and stabilizers will be supplied)

    Due to time constraints - only one towel per person.


    Sign Off:  none (This is a project class you will not be able to use the embroidery machines outside of this class unless you have the sign off)

     Students will direct, record and animate their own short stop-motion animation sketch. Makers will design and build a set using generative AI in combination with traditional design and fabrication tools. Then they’ll create their characters and animate them in a storyline. This class will allow creativity and self expression while also teaching skills of design, storytelling, digital editing, and animation principles. For Teenagers (Ages 12 to 18)

    This camp will use the LEGO® SPIKE™ kits to introduce students to the engineering design process as it pertains to robotics. Campers will start each session by defining a problem and its success criteria. Then they will design and build a prototype, test it, and gather data that will allow them to improve their solution. All fostered by the spirit of cooperation and “gracious professionalism” that permeates all FIRST robotics activities. A great introduction to FIRST robotics principles for next year's Robotics Season!

    In this camp, campers use design, build and program behaviors for their own special best friend using Micro:bit. Will your student come home with a pet rock or new robot dog? Or maybe a robot Kraken? Only they will know! At the end of the week, students will take home a complimentary Micro:Bit set so the programming fun can continue.

    Learn how to tame your dragon! Perfect for young dreamers, this camp teaches students to create their own mechanical dragon best friend. Throughout the week, campers will design dragon-scale armor, sew monster stuffies, and make pop-up cards. Can your camper tame and train their dragon?

    Beginners welcome! This camp will use the LEGO® SPIKE™ kits and the LEGO Education lesson plans to introduce students to the engineering process as it relates to competitive robotics. Campers will gradually learn the basics of building and programming robots that accomplish missions autonomously thanks to the input of sensors. Great preparation for FIRST robotics principles for next year's Robotics Season! No previous robotics experience needed.

    Teens will be immersed in the Nova Labs Artisan Studio for a week of artistic exploration. Perfect for art-loving makers, campers will unleash their creativity through crafting metal jewelry, experimenting with resin, and assembling stained glass! They will learn stained glass techniques from cutting to soldering, craft their own jewelry using various metalworking and beading methods, and learn to pour and cast resin. This camp offers a blend of creativity and skill-building.     This summer camp offers an engaging introduction to drone technology and coding. Campers will explore applications of drone technology, understand relevant drone regulations and basic concepts of manual and coded flight. Using real world scenarios, campers will apply problem solving, teamwork, coding and drone piloting to solve their missions. Campers will pilot FPV drones using beginner-friendly block-coding software. No previous coding experience is required, making this an ideal starting point for students to explore the thrilling world of drones.

    In this camp, teens will discover how to convert electricity into sound by building their own synthesizer. Participants will gain a foundation in electronics, mastering basic concepts and techniques such as soldering and laser cutting. They will assemble their synth board using a pre-designed kit and then design a custom laser-cut case to encase the electronics. By the end of the week, campers will have their own synthesizer to take home and the skills to create music with it. (For Teen ages 13-18)

    Put that geometry knowledge to work for you and get started in the art of making pop-up paper structures!

    Learn about and experiment with v-folds, parallel folds, converging creases, and more. A few basic skills are all that is needed to gain an understanding of the wonders of paper pop-up engineering, and start designing your own creations. 

    During the second part of the class we will assemble a precut pop up card to take home and celebrate  summer.

    This activity is accessible to all ages. Adult/child teams are strongly recommended for children younger than 11 or children with little experience making. An adult/child team will only build one card and pay for one registration. 

    Prerequisites: ability to use scissors, fold and crease paper. Level of difficulty: intermediate 

    Age requirement: 11+ (or with adult)

    Instructor: Fabiana Cesa is a maker educator. She has taught for the Nova Labs MakerSchool for the past three years.

They'll explore the history and techniques of public art and engage in hands-on sessions to develop skills in woodcutting, painting, and sculpture.     Teens will unleash their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit as they explore graphic design using open-source software. Campers will bring their designs to life with laser cutting, vinyl stickers, sublimation printing, and more. This program is ideal for young artists interested in turning their art into wearable and shareable items.

    Learn branding, logo development, and product and packaging design while creating a digital brand portfolio. Personalize clothes, bags, hats, and more using various makerspace tools. Guided by practicing artist and small business owner Lee Sowell of Lee Strawberry, who sells artwork at conventions and artist alleys within the DMV.

    This camp is designed for young makers to explore the Mixed Media Shop at Nova Labs! Perfect for beginners, campers will learn foundational making skills in a safe and secure environment.
